  The Eclipse Class is a class of Heavy Explorer utilized by the United Federation of Planet’s Starfleet. Intended to supersede the Galaxy Class as the Federation Flagship, development of the Eclipse class was primarily a result of the growing rise of hostilities in the late 24th Century impacting the safety and security of the Federation. Initial design briefs called for a total purchase of 150 vessels of this type to represent each of the member worlds of the United Federation of Planets; however, due to the massive resource cost associated with construction of members of the class, only five vessels were produced in total, including the prototype and one vessel representing each of the four founding worlds.
