History
The Primordial Origins of the Great Link
The genesis of the Dominion is inextricably linked to the biological and spiritual evolution of the Changeling species. Tens of thousands of years ago, the beings now known as the Founders were once solid organisms, possessing physical vulnerabilities similar to those of the humans, Klingons, and Romulans they would eventually conquer. During this ancient era, they were a peaceful, inquisitive race of explorers who traveled the stars to seek out new life and knowledge. However, their unique ability to shift their molecular structure and mimic other forms—a trait they developed as they transcended their original biology—became a source of profound terror for the "solids" they encountered. Rather than being welcomed as marvels of evolution, the Changelings were branded as demons, monsters, and threats to the natural order. They were hunted across systems, persecuted by xenophobic civilizations, and forced into a state of perpetual flight. This relentless persecution defined the Changeling psyche, fostering a deep-seated distrust of any life form that possessed a fixed physical shape. As they fled into the cold void of space, seeking refuge where no solid could follow, they discovered that their fluid forms allowed for a level of intimacy and unity impossible for other species. By merging their bodies, they found they could also entwine their minds, creating a collective consciousness where individual identities faded into a holistic whole. This became the Great Link, a massive, primordial ocean of liquid thought and matter located on a rogue planet within the Omarion Nebula of the Gamma Quadrant. The Great Link provided the Changelings with the only security they had ever known, but it also birthed a new philosophy: if the solids could not be trusted to coexist with the Changelings, then the solids must be brought under an absolute, unwavering order to ensure the Changelings' safety.
The Foundation of Order and the Vorta
With the establishment of the Great Link, the Founders realized that they could not remain in hiding forever if they wished to truly secure their future. They began a methodical process of testing local space, seeking a way to manage the chaos of the Gamma Quadrant without exposing themselves to the direct hatred of the solids. To achieve this, they required a layer of administration—beings who would act as the face of the Founders while remaining fanatically loyal. Their choice fell upon the Vorta, a primitive, ape-like species that lived in the forests of a world within the Founders' reach. According to Vorta legend, an ancestor of their race once hid a Changeling from a mob of angry solids; in gratitude, the Changeling promised that one day the Vorta would be transformed and placed at the head of a great galactic empire.Through sophisticated genetic engineering, the Founders transformed the Vorta into the sophisticated, pale-skinned administrators seen today. They stripped the Vorta of most of their sense of taste and aesthetics, replacing those traits with a heightened sense of hearing and a hardcoded, biological compulsion to worship the Founders as gods. The Vorta became the bureaucrats, diplomats, and scientists of the burgeoning Dominion. They were tasked with the "charisma-based" expansion of the empire, utilizing trade agreements, treaties, and clever negotiations to bring planetary systems under the Dominion’s umbrella. Under the guidance of the Vorta, the Dominion grew from a small collective into a massive superpower, though always with the invisible hand of the Founders guiding the overarching strategy from within the Great Link.
The Hur’q War and the Birth of the Jem’Hadar
Approximately 900 years ago, the Dominion faced its most significant existential threat: the Hur’q. In the Alpha Quadrant, the Hur’q are known primarily as the ancient pillagers of Qo'noS, but in the Gamma Quadrant, they were a devastating military force equipped with advanced plasma cannon disruptors and nearly impenetrable shielding. The Hur’q began raiding Dominion worlds with a ferocity that the Vorta’s diplomatic efforts could not contain. This conflict fundamentally shifted the empire's approach to military power. The tide of the Hur’q War turned through a combination of Changeling subterfuge and the deployment of a new, genetically perfected soldier caste: the Jem’Hadar. Changeling infiltrators were able to slip onto Hur’q vessels, sabotaging key systems and allowing boarding teams to capture advanced enemy technology. Vorta scientists reverse-engineered these Hur’q battle cruisers to create the first generation of Jem’Hadar heavy warships. The Jem’Hadar were designed to be the ultimate warriors, possessing no need for sleep, food, or relaxation, and fueled by a biological addiction to the enzyme Ketracel White, which the Vorta controlled to ensure absolute obedience. The Dominion eventually razed the Hur’q home planet and systematically erased the true name of the species from history.
The Discovery of the Wormhole and the Dominion War
The discovery of the Bajoran Wormhole in 2369 brought the Dominion into direct contact with the Alpha Quadrant. The Founders viewed the Federation’s missions of exploration as the vanguard of a "solid" invasion. To deter these intrusions, the Dominion initially utilized brute force, destroying the USS Odyssey in 2370. When the Federation remained undeterred, the Dominion initiated a campaign of destabilization through espionage, replacing key figures in the Alpha Quadrant to sow discord.By 2373, the Dominion identified the Cardassian Union as a ripe ally, triggering the Dominion War. Despite early successes, the Dominion’s momentum was halted when the Bajoran Prophets vanished a massive reinforcement fleet within the wormhole. The conflict became a war of attrition, marked by the devastation of entire systems. Section 31 infected the Founders with a morphogenic virus, leading the Dominion to negotiate a desperate alliance with the Breen Confederacy. However, the combined pressure of the Federation Alliance and an internal Cardassian resistance eventually forced the Female Changeling to surrender at the Battle of Cardassia in 2375. The Treaty of Bajor mandated the Dominion’s total withdrawal to the Gamma Quadrant.
The Diplomatic Failure of 2410
Following the "lost fleet" crisis of 2409, a brief window of opportunity for peace emerged in 2410. For the first time since the war, both the Federation and the Dominion expressed a willingness to engage in high-level peace talks. The Federation hoped to create a framework for peaceful coexistence, while the Dominion seemed open to a non-aggression pact defining territorial boundaries. However, these talks were fraught with tension. The Federation Alliance, seeking to prevent future incursions, established a Forward Observation Zone (FOZ) near the Gamma Quadrant terminus of the wormhole. The Founders interpreted the FOZ as a direct violation of their sovereignty—a "solid" attempt to blockade their territory. By mid-2410, the diplomatic relationship collapsed. The Dominion withdrew its Vorta envoys and issued a final communique stating that any further Federation expansion would be met with military force. The FOZ became a flashpoint of contention, leading to a "Cold War" state that persisted for decades.
The Indurane Discovery and the Dawn of Peace
The decades-long stalemate was finally broken in 2439 following the influence of the Founder Odo, who encouraged the Great Link to explore its own ancestry. This quest led a massive Dominion fleet to the system Sisko-Dax 1171, a quadinary star formation featuring a central body named Indurane. Tracking the fleet, the U.S.S. Enterprise-H encountered a downed Dominion Scout Vessel on a crystalline structure within Indurane's atmosphere. The Enterprise and a Dominion Reconnaissance Ship were forced into a historic moment of cooperation to rescue their respective crews from the planet's hostile indigenous fauna.Subsequent analysis revealed that Indurane was not a Brown Dwarf star, but a sentient, morphogenic life-form the size of a Class T Gas Giant. Genetic spectroscopy confirmed this entity was the "First Founder," the primordial ancestor of all Changelings. However, Indurane was found to be inherently hostile to all organized life, including its own descendants. This revelation triggered an ideological crisis within the Great Link, as they realized their origins were rooted in pure, chaotic aggression.
Odo personally coordinated with the Federation to establish a permanent quarantine of the system. This shared experience—discovering a common biological history and defending against a mutual ancestor—finally dissolved the walls of the 2410 Cold War. The Dominion recognized that the Federation’s desire for observation was a protective necessity rather than a threat. In late 2439, a formal peace treaty was ratified, establishing a joint security council for the Gamma Quadrant and officially ending nearly a century of conflict.
Location
The Dominion is the preeminent superpower of the Gamma Quadrant, maintaining a territorial reach that, at its late 24th Century peak, spanned approximately 10,000 light-years in length and 5,000 light-years in width. This domain was several times larger than the combined interstellar nations of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Historically, the empire expanded outward from the Omarion Nebula, the original site of the Changeling homeworld. Following a preemptive strike by the Romulan Tal Shiar and Cardassian Obsidian Order in 2371, the Founders relocated the Great Link to a classified world known as Empersa. This homeworld was established deep within Dominion territory, strategically positioned far from the Gamma Quadrant terminus of the Bajoran wormhole to maximize security against "solid" incursions. During the Dominion War (2373–2375), the empire’s borders briefly extended into the Alpha Quadrant through the annexation of the Cardassian Union; however, following the Treaty of Bajor, these territories were returned to local sovereignty. The nature of Dominion territory is defined by the Founders' philosophy of "order." While an outside observer might see an "archipelago" of member systems separated by vast tracts of uninhabited space, the Founders view every system patrolled by the Jem’Hadar as their sovereign property. This space serves as a massive buffer zone to protect vital assets. Unlike the Federation, the Dominion lacks a dedicated colonization service; the Founders discourage the spread of "solid" species, preferring the pacification of existing worlds. Consequently, expansions like mining colonies are designed for temporary resource extraction, with infrastructure dismantled once objectives are met.
In the 25th Century, the geopolitical landscape shifted significantly. Following the failed diplomatic efforts of 2410 and the establishment of the contentious Forward Observation Zone, relations remained in a "Cold War" state. This lasted until 2439, when the U.S.S. Enterprise-H assisted the Dominion in the discovery of Indurane, a sentient, morphogenic life-form revealed as the hostile progenitor of the Changeling species. The shared necessity of quarantining Indurane dissolved the decades-long stalemate, leading to a formal peace treaty and the transformation of the Dominion’s borders into a frontier of structured cooperation with the Federation.
Government and Society
The Government and Society of the Dominion function as a rigid, fascist theocracy governed by a philosophy known as the "Order of Things." At the absolute apex of this hierarchy are the Founders, or Changelings, who serve as both the heads of state and living gods. Their authority is total and indisputable, rooted in the Great Link, a collective consciousness where physical and mental boundaries dissolve. This unified state allows the species to maintain a singular, unwavering viewpoint focused entirely on the preservation of their kind. Driven by a traumatic history of persecution at the hands of non-shapeshifting lifeforms, whom they derogatorily term "Solids," the Founders believe that to be safe, they must impose order on a chaotic universe. As the Female Changeling famously articulated, what can be controlled cannot hurt you. Because of their practical immortality, the Founders operate with a uniquely long-term perspective, planning strategic shifts that span centuries rather than years. While the Founders are the ultimate source of law and authority, they are largely apathetic toward the mundane affairs of the solids they rule. Consequently, they are rarely seen even by their own subject races, maintaining a near-mythic status that fuels their worship as deities. The administrative and military functions of the empire are instead carried out by two genetically engineered servitor races, each programmed with a biological imperative to serve the Great Link. The Vorta serve as highly intelligent administrators, diplomats, and scientists. They manage the day-to-day logistics of the empire and act as the primary liaison between the Founders and the rest of the galaxy. The Jem’Hadar function as the Dominion’s lethal military arm; they are bred in birthing chambers, reach maturity in days, and possess a fanatical drive for combat.
A delicate and often tense balance of power exists between these two servant castes. While the mantra "The Jem’Hadar serve the Vorta, and the Vorta serve the Founders" defines the official status quo, the two races often regard one another with barely disguised contempt. The Jem’Hadar view the Vorta as weak and deceptive, while the Vorta often view the soldiers as mere tools. Control is maintained primarily through the Vorta's monopoly on ketracel-white, a life-sustaining enzyme the Jem’Hadar require to survive and remain stable. Should this biological tether fail, the hierarchy risks collapse, though the shared religious indoctrination of the "Order of Things" usually ensures that the Jem’Hadar remain loyal to the Founders even if they despise their Vorta overseers.
Dominion society at large is a cosmopolitan but oppressive collection of hundreds of different cultures, all bound by the "Way of Things." This guiding principle teaches that every species has a predestined purpose intended for the ultimate betterment of the Founders. While member races like the Karemma are granted a degree of autonomy to manage their own commercial affairs and weapons manufacturing, they remain strictly subservient to Dominion goals. For the average citizen, personal liberties are non-existent. Media broadcasts are funneled through Vorta censors to ensure alignment with official policy, and the right to assemble or protest is met with public, lethal consequences. The official language is Dominionese (the native tongue of the Vorta) which serves as a tool of administrative control, ensuring the Vorta maintain a natural advantage in all legal and trade negotiations.
To maintain internal stability, the Vorta utilize a sophisticated propaganda machine known as the "Golden Dream." This narrative portrays backward worlds as "little brothers" who can achieve a higher status through hard work and unwavering loyalty. The Founders occasionally elevate specific individuals to positions of luxury or authority, but such rewards are reserved strictly for those who inform on their neighbors and demonstrate fanatical support for the regime. This creates a society fueled by paranoia, where the facade of a peaceful, heroic race of Founders masks a reality of unyielding authoritarianism. Spot inspections of bodies and homes are routine, and in many systems, individuals are denied the right to choose their own career paths, with their roles dictated by the state's needs.
The expansion of the Dominion is equally methodical. The Vorta utilize psychohistorians to assess the most efficient route for absorbing new systems, preferring covert contact and "Collaborators" over immediate violence. By offering solutions to local crises, such as medical cures or industrial aid, the Vorta bait planetary leaders into signing away their sovereignty. However, if a world chooses to rebel against the "Way of Things," the response is devastating. The Dominion does not merely defeat rebels; it extracts payment through "righteous warfare," often punishing the bloodlines of the resistant for generations. This ensures that while the Dominion presents itself as a benevolent bringer of peace, its subjects understand that this peace is predicated entirely on blind loyalty and the total forfeiture of free will.
Member Species
Changeling/Founder
The Founders, or Changelings, are a morphogenic species from the Gamma Quadrant who serve as the absolute, living gods of the Dominion. Originally evolved from non-metamorphic lifeforms, their journey from peaceful explorers to authoritarian rulers was driven by a history of violent persecution at the hands of "solids". This trauma fostered a deep-seated distrust of any species with a fixed physical shape, leading to the creation of the Great Link, a collective consciousness where individual identities and physical boundaries dissolve. Their guiding philosophy is rooted in the belief that only by imposing order upon a chaotic universe can they truly be safe from those who once hunted them.Physiologically, a Founder’s natural state is a golden-orange or brown gelatinous fluid. They possess the unique ability to rearrange their molecular structure to mimic any form, including rocks, trees, animals, or specific humanoid individuals. When mimicking a solid, they assume its physical qualities, such as the flight of a bird or the cell biology of a humanoid, though they retain their own internal healing and resistance. Most Changelings cannot maintain a solid shape indefinitely; they must revert to their liquid state every sixteen hours for at least four hours of rest to prevent cellular decay. In their natural form, they are impervious to most physical attacks and lack the senses of smell and taste.
The Founders rule through a strict hierarchy known as the "Order of Things," utilizing two primary servitor races programmed for fanatical worship. The Vorta act as the administrative face of the empire, while the Jem'Hadar serve as the military force, both regarding the Founders as deities. For centuries, the most sacred law of their species was that no Changeling shall ever harm another, a tenet finally broken in 2371. During the Dominion War, the secret Federation group Section 31 attempted to commit genocide against the species by infecting the Great Link with a morphogenic virus. While Odo eventually provided a cure to his people, a splinter group of renegades later emerged who had been subjected to torturous experiments. These "evolved" Changelings, led by Vadic, allied with the Borg in 2401 to launch a conspiracy against Starfleet before being exposed and defeated.
Dosi
The Dosi are a humanoid species originating from the planet Dosa II, located in the Gamma Quadrant near the Idran entrance of the Bajoran wormhole. Physically, they appear similar to humans in height but possess greater muscle mass and distinctive white skin and hair. However, this natural appearance is often obscured by their cultural practice of shaving their heads and applying intricate body paint. Their faces are typically painted red with white lines and blue dots, where the number of white lines serves as a direct indicator of an individual's wealth and power.Culturally, the Dosi are defined by an aggressive and confrontational demeanor that permeates even their most basic social interactions. This behavior is dictated by an elaborate code of honor that demands a constant display of strength and an utter disdain for perceived cowardice. They famously settle disagreements through physical violence, ranging from brawling to knife fights. This bellicose nature extends to their role as merchants; they are known as extremely hostile negotiators who attempt to badger trade partners into submission rather than seeking common ground. Despite this, they are capable of forming strong alliances with those who show the "backbone" to stand up to them, treating such allies with a zealous hospitality that matches their aggression toward enemies.
The Dosi state is known as the Dosi Confederation, with its capital city located at Relxer-D. Historically a preindustrial people focused on ritual combat, they only recently became an interstellar society after receiving warp technology from off-worlders. By the 24th century, they became low-ranking subjects of the Dominion, having been conquered by the Jem'Hadar. Within the Dominion hierarchy, they are often overseen by the Karemma, who utilize Dosi delegations to make first contact with new species as a way to test their tolerance and resolve.
Beyond their reputation as warriors and merchants, the Dosi are respected vintners. Their tulaberry wine is a highly sought-after trade good that famously brought them into contact with the Ferengi in 2370. As of 2378, the Dosi population was estimated at 1.5 billion, and while they remain subjects of the Dominion, they are known to conduct independent business deals behind the Dominion's back if profit is involved.
Drai
The Drai, frequently referred to by outsiders as the "Hunters," are one of the oldest and most influential member species of the Dominion, having served the Founders for over 2,000 years. Native to the Drai system, they are a humanoid race characterized by pale-yellow skin, corrugated foreheads, and a unique genetic mastery that served as the foundation for the Dominion’s military and administrative sectors.Drai society is defined by a rigid clan structure where the "Hunters" represent the elite upper crust. These individuals dedicate their lives to the "Hunt," a sacred ritual in which they track and kill the Tosk: a sentient species the Drai genetically engineered specifically to be the "perfect prey." While the elite engage in these hunts, the lower and middle classes serve as the backbone of the Dominion’s biological infrastructure. They act as breeders and handlers for the Jem'Hadar and attendants in Vorta cloning facilities. In fact, it was the Drai who used their genetic looms to uplift the Vorta from primitive forest dwellers and twisted Tosk DNA to create the aggressive Jem'Hadar warriors.
Technology utilized by the Drai is highly specialized for pursuit and survival. Hunters wear sophisticated helmets equipped with advanced tracking gear and protective suits that dissipate the effects of phaser fire. Their weaponry includes high-tech energy crossbows capable of blasting through reinforced doors in a single shot. For defense, they utilize metallic shield generators built into their gauntlets. Their starships, though smaller than Jem'Hadar cruisers, are formidable; they utilize unknown radiation types to reverse the polarity of enemy shields, allowing for invasive transport even through active defense grids.
Despite their importance, the Founders maintain a policy of reclusive secrecy for the Drai, largely to prevent outsiders from stealing the genetic secrets of the Jem'Hadar. Most Drai live on Drai Prime, where densely populated cities feature statues of Hunt champions and giant screens broadcasting live feeds of active hunts. While the Drai are proud of their status as the Founders' oldest allies, they are also subject to public shame if they fail in their duties. The fifth planet in their system, Drai V, remains a grim site of constant production, housing massive breeding tanks where the Jem'Hadar are still produced to this day.
Tosk
The Tosk, a reptilian humanoid species from the Gamma Quadrant, are a unique biological and cultural phenomenon within the Dominion's sphere of influence. Their name literally translates to "The Hunted," a designation that defines their entire existence and purpose. Physically, they possess an alligator-like appearance, featuring dark greenish scales on the back of the head and lighter yellow-green scales on the front. Their slit-like eyes and fanged teeth highlight their reptilian nature. Engineered by the Drai to be the ultimate prey, the Tosk serve as the central focus of a ritualistic hunt that confers prestige upon their pursuers.Biologically, the Tosk are masterpieces of survival and evasion. They require only 17 minutes of rest per day and do not need to eat or drink in a traditional sense, as they store liquid nutrients throughout their bodies. One of their most formidable traits is the "shroud," a genetic ability to become invisible to the naked eye. This trait, along with their extreme agility and a physiology that is difficult to detect on sensors, was so impressive that the Founders later used the Tosk genome as the base template for the Jem’Hadar. Despite being "the hunted," Tosk are highly intelligent, possessing advanced engineering skills and tactical knowledge that allow them to fight back or even kill their hunters if necessary.
The Tosk operate under a rigid code of honor that emphasizes cunning and silence. They take an oath never to discuss the hunt with outsiders and view being captured and returned to their homeworld alive as a great disgrace. In their culture, the ultimate humiliation is being kept alive in a zoo-like display for the amusement of the Drai masses. To a Tosk, the most honorable end is to die during a successful hunt. This cultural mindset creates a strange dynamic of mutual respect; the Drai admire the Tosk for their skill, and the Tosk take pride in being worthy of such a high-stakes pursuit.
While they are generally guarded and quiet, Tosk have shown they can be amicable if they perceive no threat. In 2369, a Tosk became the first Gamma Quadrant visitor to the Alpha Quadrant, where he eventually escaped Hunter custody with the help of Federation personnel. Outside of the Hunt, Tosk have no formal group culture, as they are released into the wild as soon as they are old enough to begin the cycle of evasion. For these individuals, the meaning of life is distilled into a single, eternal challenge: outsmarting the Hunters for one more day.
Jem'Hadar
The Jem’Hadar are a genetically engineered race of reptilian humanoids who serve as the ruthless military arm of the Dominion. Bred in birthing chambers or hatcheries, they possess no junk DNA and reach full physical and cognitive maturity in only three days. They are a single-gender species composed entirely of males, a design choice intended to ensure their absolute loyalty remains focused on their creators, the Founders.Physically, the Jem’Hadar are built for durability and combat. They possess thick, scaly gray skin with horn-like protrusions and exhibit strength and eyesight several times greater than that of a Human. A unique biological ability is the "shroud," a personal cloaking field that allows them to become invisible to the naked eye and most sensors. Adults require no sleep or food; instead, they subsist entirely on ketracel-white, an isogenic enzyme distributed by their Vorta overseers. This drug is both their sole source of nourishment and a chemical tether that ensures obedience. Without it, their circulatory systems collapse, and they become uncontrollably violent.
The Jem’Hadar culture is defined by a rigid military hierarchy where relaxation and recreation are shunned as weaknesses. They revere the Founders as living gods, often committing ritual suicide if they fail to protect a Changeling. Their philosophy is encapsulated in the mantra "victory is life," a sentiment recited in pre-battle rituals where they declare themselves already dead to ground their instincts for the coming fight. Because of their violent lifestyle, most die young; those who reach the age of twenty are honored with the title of "Honored Elder," though none are known to have ever lived to thirty.
In combat, they utilize advanced technology such as phased polaron weapons, which can bypass standard shields, and melee weapons like the kar'takin. Their ships are utilitarian, often lacking chairs to maintain constant combat readiness. During the Dominion War, a new breed called "Alphas" was bred in the Alpha Quadrant, leading to friction with the original "Gamma" units who remained more traditional in their rituals and loyalty. Despite these internal tensions, the Jem’Hadar remain a terrifying force of absolute order.
Karemma
The Karemma are a spacefaring humanoid species native to the planet Karemma in the Gamma Quadrant. As prominent members of the Dominion, they serve as an important economic power and a merchant caste, tasked by the Founders with regulating trade across the quadrant. Physically, they are tall and slender with dark hair combed into ornate styles, where a higher coif signifies greater social status. They possess thin skin folds around the eyes and a smooth midline ridge extending from the forehead down the nose.History between the Karemma and the Alpha Quadrant began in 2370 when the Ferengi, acting on behalf of Grand Nagus Zek, sought 100,000 vats of tulaberry wine. This relationship eventually allowed the Federation to use the Karemma as a point of contact to seek out the Founders, though officials like First Minister Ornithar admitted to having no direct knowledge of their masters' identities at the time. While the Karemma remained largely detached from the Dominion War, they later resumed trade with the Alpha Quadrant in 2381 after a dispute involving stolen technology in the "Quark 2000" replicator was settled.
Karemma society is built upon the Karemma Foundation and governed through the Ministry of Trade. They are strict mercantilists who value honesty and integrity, believing that every piece of merchandise has a set fair value based on materials, labor, and a reasonable profit margin. Unlike the Vorta or Jem'Hadar, the Karemma do not view the Founders as divine. Instead, they are a practical people who willingly joined the Dominion to avoid bloodshed and now refer promising species to the Vorta for membership.
Technologically, the Karemma maintain their own fleet and manufacture various goods, including fleece and torpedoes sold to the Jem'Hadar. They possess an instinctive ability for "instant appraisal," allowing them to identify the material composition and worth of an object almost immediately. Despite their public alignment with the Dominion, some Vorta suspect the Karemma of conducting clandestine trade with blacklisted species or installing hidden weaknesses in the armaments they supply to their masters.
T-Rogoran
The T-Rogorans were once a dominant and warlike power within the Gamma Quadrant, known for a campaign of conquest that spanned eight centuries. Native to the planet T-Rogoran Prime, located in a unique trinary star system, this species achieved warp capability around the year 1570. In their physical appearance, the T-Rogorans vaguely resembled Earth crustaceans, though they were not aquatic and were fully adapted to terrestrial M-class environments.Historically, the T-Rogoran society was defined by a rigid warrior class that targeted less-developed civilizations. Their most notable conquest occurred in the 16th century when they subjugated the Skrreeans, a race of humanoid farmers. For 800 years, the T-Rogorans ruled the Skrreeans with extreme cruelty, executing their leaders and forcing the remaining population into lives of indentured servitude as laborers and servants. This exploitative system allowed the T-Rogoran elite to enjoy lives of leisure, supported by the tribute and labor extracted from their support base. During their height, they were the local powerhouse in their region of space, operating largely because the Dominion was focused on other sectors.
The T-Rogoran era of dominance came to a violent end in the late 2360s when the Dominion finally turned its attention toward their territory. Despite the T-Rogorans' fierce reproduction rates and high population—factors that managed to prolong the conflict for several years—their armada was eventually hunted down and systematically destroyed by the Jem'Hadar. By the time the conquest was finalized in 2370, the T-Rogoran planetary government had been forcibly annexed by the Dominion. This invasion created a power vacuum that allowed their former subjects, the Skrreeans, to rise in rebellion, commandeer T-Rogoran vessels, and flee toward the Alpha Quadrant.
In the post-conquest era, the T-Rogorans experienced a precipitous decline. Once proud warriors and overlords, the few survivors became subjects of the Dominion, frequently relegated to labor camps. In an ironic twist of fate, these camps were often overseen by members of the very races the T-Rogorans had previously oppressed. By 2370, the species was considered to be on the verge of extinction, with experts predicting they might disappear entirely within a single generation if they failed to recover. Despite their collapse, T-Rogoran artifacts and items became extremely valuable in the years following the Dominion War, serving as rare relics of a fallen empire.
Teplan
The Teplan species, originating from a world in the Teplan system within the Kendari sector of the Gamma Quadrant, represents one of the most tragic examples of Dominion retribution. Once a great and formidable civilization with magnificent cities and the technology for interstellar travel, the Teplans were a significant power whose fleets were capable of holding the Dominion at bay. In the mid-22nd century, they attempted to lead an alliance of races to resist the Dominion's expansion. In response, the Founders ordered the development of a biological weapon known as the Blight to break the Teplan empire without resorting to immediate genocide. This incurable disease was engineered to infect the entire Teplan genome, ensuring that every child was born with the infection while still in the womb. The Blight is particularly sinister because its progression is accelerated by exposure to electromagnetic fields, which forced the Teplans to deactivate the majority of their advanced technology to survive. Consequently, within a decade, their once-great cities became crumbling ruins, and their society regressed to an almost medieval lifestyle focused entirely on death and the easing of pain. The disease eventually reaches a final, agonizing stage known as the "Quickening," characterized by a brilliant red rash and the rapid destruction of the body.
For generations, the Teplan population continued to dwindle as few individuals lived long enough to reproduce, and those who did passed the agony to their offspring. However, a significant turning point occurred in 2372 when Doctor Julian Bashir and Jadzia Dax visited the Teplan homeworld. Although Bashir’s initial use of advanced medical equipment inadvertently hastened the disease in his patients due to electromagnetic radiation, he successfully developed a vaccine using less sophisticated tools. By inoculating pregnant women, the antigen is absorbed by the placenta, protecting the unborn child and allowing a new generation to be born free of the Blight. While a total cure for those already infected remains elusive, this medical breakthrough provided the Teplans with their first genuine hope for a future. Today, the species faces the monumental task of rebuilding their shattered economy and redeveloping their lost scientific understanding from scratch.
Vorta
The Vorta are a humanoid species from the Gamma Quadrant, specifically native to Kurill Prime, who serve as the primary administrators, diplomats, scientists, and field commanders for the Dominion. According to their own history and legends, they were originally a timid, ape-like species that lived in hollowed-out trees to avoid the many predators on their homeworld. Their rise to power began when a Vorta family hid a fleeing Changeling from an angry mob of "solids"; in gratitude, the Changeling promised to transform them into powerful beings to help rule a vast interstellar empire.Physiologically, Vorta are characterized by pale skin, violet eyes, and elongated ear ridges that are completely joined to the head. The Founders genetically engineered them to have a sense of hearing far greater than that of most humanoids, though this was balanced by comparatively weak eyesight. They are naturally immune to most forms of poison, a trait that proves particularly useful in their roles as negotiators and diplomats. While most Vorta lack superhuman powers, at least one agent, Eris, demonstrated powerful telekinetic blasts. Despite their advanced status, Vorta have a very limited sense of taste and aesthetics, possessing no appreciation for art and enjoying only the nuts and berries that sustained them before their genetic alteration.
The Vorta view the Founders as living gods and are programmed with an intrinsic belief in absolute obedience. They occupy a high-status position in the Dominion hierarchy, often serving as the face of the empire and commanding the Jem'Hadar. Part of this command includes the ritual distribution of ketracel-white to ensure Jem'Hadar loyalty. Vorta reproduction is achieved exclusively through cloning; when a Vorta dies, a new "version" is activated, inheriting the memories of its predecessors. To prevent capture or the persistence of "defective" traits, every Vorta is equipped with a termination implant in their brain stem designed to cause death upon activation. Although they are often unfailingly polite, the Vorta are widely regarded by other species as cunning, treacherous, and manipulative.
Yaderan
The Yaderans are a humanoid species from the Gamma Quadrant known for their unparalleled expertise in artificial intelligence, simulation technology, and omicron radiation-emitting holotechnology. Historically, Yaderan society was defined by an idyllic, communal philosophy: each citizen was responsible for the success of the collective, believing one could "fly higher with a thousand pairs of wings than with just one." Their cities featured rainbow-colored towers representing different societal strata arranged to show that no one group was superior. This fledgling interstellar state remained focused on internal growth for centuries before venturing beyond their solar system, a period of peace that ended abruptly in 2340.The Dominion annexed Yadera Prime through a fast and brutal invasion that fundamentally erased the native way of life. The Founders specifically coveted Yaderan scientific prowess to advance Dominion military capabilities. To secure the cooperation of these brilliant minds without the risk of sabotage, the Vorta established a "Technocrat" class. These surviving scholars were offered a decadent, luxurious lifestyle in exchange for directing their research solely toward weapons of mass destruction and expansionist technology. This elite group now resides in the walled "Splendid District" of the capital city, Yangol, where their every need is met by servants from the lower classes.
The cost of this collaboration has been catastrophic for the Yaderan people. The Vorta razed non-essential cultural buildings like theaters and schools, recoloring all remaining public structures emerald green - the traditional hue of the scholars. While the Technocrats live in luxury, the less-educated masses suffer in labor camps or serve as test subjects for new inventions, such as military assassin drones. Under Dominion mandate, Yaderan scientists developed the anti-proton scanning system now standard on Jem’Hadar vessels and provided critical insights into cloaking and AI-driven espionage.
The most harrowing example of their forced contribution is the development of the "sun-killer" bomb, a portable device designed to weaponize a star and destroy an entire solar system in minutes. During the weapon's testing phase, the Founders insisted on using inhabited Yaderan colonies as targets; it took eleven attempts—and the destruction of eleven systems—to perfect the technology. Consequently, the Yaderan elite bear a profound sense of guilt for the blood of their own kind. While many Yaderans, like the engineer Rurigan, fled the homeworld to escape this unrecognizable new reality, those who remain exist in a fractured society where the once-united spirit of the people has been replaced by a grim hierarchy of survival and complicity.
Military, Science, and Technology
The military acumen of the Dominion functions as a singular, cohesive instrument of absolute order, designed to neutralize threats to the Founders through a sophisticated combination of overwhelming force, psychological warfare, and long-term strategic patience. Unlike the major powers of the Alpha Quadrant that often prioritize immediate tactical gains, the Dominion utilizes a centuries-long perspective, frequently making short-term concessions to ensure a total victory that may not manifest for generations. Their preferred method of conquest begins with influence and espionage rather than open warfare. The Federation witnessed this firsthand when Dominion infiltrators destabilized the Alpha Quadrant by orchestrating a war between the Cardassian Union and the Klingon Empire, eventually allowing the Dominion to enter the sector as a stabilizing ally rather than an invader. When such guile fails, the government deploys the Jem’Hadar, a genetically engineered soldier caste whose overwhelming strength and tactical acumen are typically enough to keep most member worlds in line through the mere threat of reprisal. The true foundation of the Dominion’s technological edge lies in its mastery of genetic engineering. Having a thousand-year head start on most neighboring civilizations, the Founders have merged the innovations of disparate societies, such as the Drai, to create breakthroughs at a species-wide level. This scientific prowess is a dual-edged sword. Diplomatically, Dominion physicians offer cures for terminal illnesses to entice potential member worlds into the fold. Conversely, their researchers spend months perfecting irresistible, species-specific pathogens to unleash upon civilian populations that resist the Way of Things. These biological weapons serve as a devastating deterrent, ensuring that the cost of rebellion is paid in the blood of the resistant for generations. This mastery extends to the "soft" sciences, where Vorta psychohistorians and behavioral specialists analyze data from infiltrators to create accurate profiles of foreign leaders. They utilize advanced simulation programs to interface with kidnapped subjects, creating environments so realistic that individuals may divulge sensitive secrets or reveal their willingness to capitulate without ever realizing they have left their home planets.
In the realm of physical infrastructure, the Dominion utilizes neutronium to construct its most vital facilities. This ultra-dense material is incredibly strong and naturally resistant to scans from standard sensors or tricorders, providing a physical layer of security that complements the Founders' inherent paranoia. For added protection, rooms set aside specifically for the Changelings often utilize mechanical locks that can only be manipulated by someone with metamorphic abilities. This technological ecosystem is designed to ensure that the Founders remain secure behind layers of both biological and material shielding, as they believe that anything that can be controlled cannot hurt them.
The naval arm of the Dominion is comprised of starships that represent a significant departure from Federation design philosophy. During initial encounters, Dominion technology outpaced the Alpha Quadrant primarily through the use of phased polaron beams. These weapons could pass through standard deflective and thermal shielding without resistance, a tactical advantage that resulted in the high-profile destruction of vessels like the USS Odyssey. Although Starfleet eventually developed countermeasures, polaron technology remains lethal in personal combat, where handheld pistols act as an anticoagulant that prevents natural healing and complicates medical stabilization. Despite these offensive advantages, Dominion vessels possess notable technical limitations, particularly in propulsion. Their warp capability is less advanced than that of major Alpha Quadrant species, but the military employs specialized transponders that enable transporters to beam individuals across distances as far as three light-years.
The interior of a Dominion warship reflects the utilitarian nature of its crew. Since Jem’Hadar soldiers have no need for sleep or recreation, these vessels lack chairs and leisure facilities, containing furniture only within the quarters of a Vorta commander. Furthermore, in accordance with the Founders’ distrust of "solid" sensory perception, Dominion military ships do not feature traditional viewscreens. Instead, the Vorta commander and the Jem’Hadar First wear augmented reality eyepieces that interface directly with the ship’s sensors, allowing the wearers to effectively see through the hull and process all incoming tactical data through a virtual overlay. This integration of biology and machine ensures that the Dominion’s fleet remains a focused, tireless extension of the Founders’ will, ready to be sacrificed at a moment's notice to protect the secrets and sovereignty of the Great Link.
Starbases
Starbases are permanent support facilities operated by the Dominion and consist of a variety of components, including space stations, drydocks, and/or ground installations. Commonly, Dominion Starbases perform military functions on behalf of the Founders; however, some stations conduct civilian operations in support of the Dominion and its aims. While most governments employ large, fixed spaceborne facilities for their Starbases, the Dominion is more inclined to building planetary or asteroid based compounds to serve as starbases. Commanded by the Vorta and manned by a variety of Jem'Hadar, Dominion stations are responsible for the resupply of Dominion vessels and replenishing Dominion personnel. Because of this mandate, most Dominion Starbases incorporate cloning facilities to support the Dominion's Drai cloners.
Presently, the Dominion classifies its base stations in the following manner:
- Basestation: A small, fixed installation. Basestations are lightly armed and shielded stations that are constructed in areas where a permanent facility is needed but a full combat-ready station is not.
- Battlestation: Larger than a Basestation, Dominion Battlestations are more heavily armed and protected. Battlestations are typically built in areas where some combat may be expected, but the expense of a full Starbase is not required.
- Starbase: A large, fixed installation, Starbases serve to establish control points in space and to provide major staging areas from which to deploy starships. Dominion Starbases are heavily armed, heavily protected, dangerous facilities.

Starships
Battleship
The most powerful vessels in the Dominion military, Battleships are large, heavily armed ships that serve as the flagships of entire fleets. While they have devastating weapons and heavy armor to protect them, Battleships typically lack maneuverability when compared to smaller ships, providing a dangerous weakness that an attacker can exploit. Currently, Starfleet employs no Battleships in its navy, but a Heavy Explorer stripped of its exploration-oriented equipment would be comparable to a Battleship.

Carrier
A Carrier is an immense warship that serves as a mobile starbase and is equipped with large hangar facilities for supporting, arming, deploying and recovering spacecraft. First fielded by the Dominion during the Dominion War, Carriers perform diverse missions ranging including power projection, crisis response, and supporting planetary invasion. Due to their size and capabilities, a Carrier allows the Dominion to exert their power far from their home territory.

Cruiser
Cruisers are mid- to large-sized vessels that have been optimized for a variety of general or specialized mission profiles. Thanks to their heavy armament, Cruisers serve at the forefront of Dominion forces and are easier and less resource intensive to build, leading to many of these craft being built. Dominion Cruisers are designed for military/interdiction duties and have improved tactical packages or as long-range patrol craft with enhanced drive systems. Despite their military bent, Cruisers can be assigned to limited exploratory missions.

Destroyer
Smaller than a Cruiser, but larger than a Frigate, Destroyers are vessels designed almost entirely for military purposes. Dominion Destroyers are fast, maneuverable, long-endurance warships intended to escort larger vessels and to help defend them against a wide range of general threats. Because of these responsibilities, vessels of this classification are as heavily armed and defended as a Cruiser and are capable of delivering a devastating punch to their opposition.
