Mission: Short Treks
Location: Primary medical ward

Icarus had moved to the still unconscious Trill's side casting him a concerned look. The diagnostic screening kept spitting out alarm upon alarm. Inexperience showed in the young feline's uncertainty as she glanced between monitor, patient and other doctors present. "Why isn't the saline helping," she fretted, whiskers drooling in concern.

Kiera moved across taking a look with concern. “Talk me through what you’ve done so far for him Icarus, let’s check all bases have been covered.”

"I've only set up the saline to help with rehydration," the Sivaoan answered, "I've only just stepped up to help Doctor Kholin, after Amber left and you took care of the dragon." But she worried because the alarms kept going.

"You did well to start the saline Icarus" Rio finished praising the medical staff for their great responses and efficient work and then approached the one remaining urgent patient, Lt Cmdr Datari.

"However, to answer your question, these are burns so the hydration is indeed essential but the skin and flesh that have been damaged will be responding to the burn process by producing (and probably losing) a large amount of plasma in an emergency response and attempt at both protection and healing. Depending on how long ago the excessive heat was experienced by the patient's body, will determine whether or not the actual heat has dispersed yet and also the production of blisters to contain the plasma and protect it all from outside irritants, harmful incoming physical influences or any form of friction, no matter how soft. The alarms will also continue all the while the programming in the Bio-bed and bio-arch can detect severe harm still not healed yet and all other, multiple stress(es) on the whole body, not least of all shock. So, it won't go completely quiet for some time now, despite us possibly exhausting all the possibilities we can apply as first response, for now."

"Have you been able to administer a hefty dose of analgesics? Pain puts a lot of stress on already damaged systems too" The CMO added, all the time adjusting the Bio-Arch's settings, refining the smallest of measurements and amounts on medications being delivered.

“He’ll certainly need the pain relief” Kiera added as she noted Rio’s response as well. “The burns will continue to react to the air around them, on Earth in days before our current med tech they used to advise wrapping the skin in cling film to protect it from the air until proper treatment could be administered.”

Amber entered sickbay on her way back from the bridge. “I gave Aidan pain relief on the surface, as well as a stimulant to help keep him on his feet. He passed out from heat exhaustion. It was all I could do at the time. Oh and for reference no tri-ox he’s allergic to it.”

Icarus shook her head, no she hadn't given any additional pain relief just yet. "Cling film?" She queried though her focus remained on the patient. "Burns seem restricted to upper body," she reported, "varying degree of severity. I'll add broad spectrum antibiotics to the list too. Stimulant is still on board and may counteract anything we give him, right?"

"The stimulant will flush through an unjoined Trill's metabolic pathway faster than a humanoid baseline, but it's definitely compounding his autonomic stress," Tiazal reported, her fingers flying across the secondary console to pull up Datari's baseline profile. She quickly prepped the hypospray and handed it toward Icarus with practiced efficiency. "Telemetry shows severe autonomic overload from the thermal shock and chroniton drag. Doctor, I've prepped five milligrams of a broad-spectrum neuro-analgesic; that should bypass the remaining stimulant, drop his heart rate, and silence those biobed alarms."

“Damn!” Amber cursed herself. “I didn’t realise it’d cause more harm than good. I should have known better.”

“You did what you felt you needed to do for him Counsellor” Kiera added with a calm tone. “You didn’t know you’d be beaming to the ship so soon, or that you’d all end up in such a state.”

“Thank you Chief” Amber nodded and smiled. “I’ll be more cautious next time.”

Icarus administered the medication and announced that it was on board. "I agree," she said softly, while deferring to Kholin to determine the next path of treatment. "You did what you could Counselor, and it probably saved his life. Didn't she doctor?"

"Indubitably" Rio acknowledged.

“Ohh I remember now!” Amber looked between those present, when Aidan collapsed he was in full hyperthermic shock, his pulse was at 160, so I gave him Hyronalin to try and protect him from the effects of the heat.”

"And that was a quick-thinking, sensible and generically life-saving course of action in the circumstances, it's very unfortunate that it also caused the specific unjoined Trill response but it most certainly did keep the patient alive long enough for us to retrieve him and then counter that excess in good time to help him into a full return to recouperation mode." Kholin elaborated with a reassuring smile and a soft touch on the Counsellor's shoulder. "It was good work my friend, don't beat yourself up about it. We all have this as a team and the end result is that he will recover and he didn't die. I call that as good as it gets."

Kiera offered a warm smile. “You were relying on Academy training no doubt, it doesn’t cover the more complicated side of things just the basics. You did well given the circumstances.”

Amber nodded. “Thank you both. Anyway I’m going to head to my quarters and rest for a bit, I’ll see you later.

Kiera nodded before looking to Rio. “What can I do to help Doctor?”

"I think we have the worst of it in hand now, thanks Kiera. Aidan and Sherlock have more assistance than they need and are only prescribed for rest now and they were the worst of our casualties so everyone is getting treatment, help or support. It's a very good job done by a great team and I'm very proud of each any every one of the whole Medial Department. If you'd like to take one last check around everyone and make doubly sure, belt and braces etc, then you've earned yourself a break! I don't think anyone has had lunch so the patients will be getting their suppers shortly so we should make sure the medics at least get something for themselves, even if it's only one meal where there should have been two, I don't want anyone going hypoglycaemic on us after such a sterling day's work!" Rio smiled and took herself at her own word, breaking out a round of soft drinks for all the staff and even offering any of the patients who wanted one, at the same time.

Off?
