1,502 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: Atlantis
Location: Bridge, Starfleet One
Timeline: 2429-12-03, 21:30

Commander Randall considered volunteering to return to the Preserver ship to help with the recovery of Galatea but decided against it as she would be of more use in the role the Admiral had delegated to her. The use of the IFF beacon would work but IFF was not directional and that was a problem not easily remedied without appearing to be hostile. It also only allowed the pacifier to be used to keep the Preserver ship asleep and not also be used to protect those on board ship who were being unduly effected by the 'music'. The pacifier had to do both jobs on the chance the effect intensified, whatever the reason might be. Ash looked to Commander Kaldiran as it occurred to her to ask. "You wouldn't happen to have a quartz-rubite matrix, would you?" She asked, just on the off chance Kaldiran did.

Zeph reached into his duty sashe and brought out a spare memory pack for his wrist computer. Handing over the 25mm x 48mm x 2mm crystalline rectangle in a small carry case, he asked, "How about a Memory Module not psi linked to a user yet? It's primed and ready to receive overlays. Do you have appropriate tech to work with it?"

Ash peered at the crystalline wafer in it's case for a second or two and looked up at Commander Kaldiran. "Appropriate equipment? Not really, no. But I think we can probably cobble something together to do the job and be able to protect the crew from the influence of that Juggernaut." She replied, with a few nods of her head. "What would you recommend?" She asked, while she picked up the doctor bag that acted as her engineering kit and popped it open to dig something out.

Zeph pulled back his left sleeve to expose his L'Tandrey wrist computer. His was slightly different from Save'ena's wrist computer in that it was a more sleek design and more powerful as it was a command wrist computer, one given to ship captains. He gripped a section of the underside holding band and a section came away. That section stiffened in his grasp as he now opened up the memory case. "This is a Federation-L'Tandrey translation adapter. It is used to connect to Fed tech for day to day use of the ship's computers." He slid the memory into an indent on the adapter, and then the adapter flashed blue across its interface. Zeph held that out to Ash, "There you go. There is a key code on the plug end used to connect directly to Fed Tech. If you want indirect, touch that code twice then look for it on your equipment. Only equipment you are using will see it as the adapter reads and is powered by your body aura to send its encrypted connection code. While it is durable, it could still be broken, so play nice with it, please. Questions?"

While Commander Kaldiran spoke, Ash watched what he was doing and listened to what he was saying while she also dug around in her engineering bag until she found, by touch, what it was she was looking for and retrieved a small, blue, egg shaped capsule. She held the capsule up for Kaldiran to see. "You want to divide and conquer?" She asked. "One of us work on the overlay and implement the IFF tranquilizer while the other integrates the pacifier into the navigational shields?" The Tuansee asked.

Zeph bowed politely, stated, "I shall work with the overlay. Then, on pacifier, instead of StarFleet One's Navigation shields, I would suggest using a Class 4 probe. It has shielding to tie into, station keeping capabilities excelled for following a planets trajectory, or in this case, a sleeping ship, and a full sensor suite for mapping energies of a planet, including biometrics, which could be modified for brain activities and minor psionic fluctuations."

The Class 4 probe was, pretty much, ideal for the purpose. Ash had some misgivings about integrating the pacifier into a piece of hardware that might be destroyed but, Wallace family relic or not, the alternative was probably the destruction of Starfleet One.

"That'll work. I managed to reverse engineer this, little, dingus down to the last detail but, since it was never effective for me, I have no idea whether my clone of it works or not. Now's not the time to find out, either." Ash mused, as she set to work on the configuration of the Class 4 probe to suite their purposes and contemplated the most effective interface to use for the integration of the pacifier.

Zeph went to a console put the memory module onto a flat surface. He double touched the wireless interface on the device and then selected it from the interface with equipment commands on the console. It came up. He now interfaced with the console with his wrist computer, selecting the appropriate programs to now overlay the incoming scans from the Preserver ship onto the memory module, and as he was doing it, he began putting in appropriate overlays to help out with psionic intrusions as well.

William approached the duo, "What do we have?"

Ash glanced up at Admiral Teagarden and then back to what she was doing. "I'm getting a Class 4 probe outfitted appropriately to act as an emitter for the psionic dampening field of the pacifier and, then, it's just a quick jaunt down to the prep-bay to physically integrate the pacifier into the probe. So, we should have the probe on station in ten or twelve minutes, barring complications." The engineer responded and then glanced to Commander Kaldiran.

Zeph, with the programs now in write mode and nothing from him to do at this time, turned around and smiled to Will. "Admiral. I'm getting scans overlaid onto the memory module. I would request permission to inlay specific psi components as well to not only block the incoming scan pattern, but to block other subconscious quests and help out with Psionic intrusions, now and in the future. Let's see if we can protect Galatea and crew from future psi endeavors for when Galatea is back on board, by your leave, of course."

"Excellent," the Admiral answered while rubbing his hands together. "See to it," he directed at Kaldiran then he looked at Ash for a moment, considering carefully broaching the past. "This probably brought back up some old wounds for you, Commander. How are you holding up?"

Ash finalized the configuration of the Class 4 probe and looked to the Admiral at his question. "I was caught off guard by the moment, Admiral, but I'm fine. Thank you, for asking." She replied, genuinely enough. "I'm just a bit more emotive than I used to be." She added, a giant understatement if there ever was one and she held up the blue, egg shaped container, the pacifier was in. "If I hadn't been too cowardly to face Emily's family, after her death in the Vaadwaur attack on Earth, I wouldn't have this, now. Funny how things come full circle. She was killed when the predecessor to this ship was destroyed and, now, something of hers may be what prevents the destruction of this ship." The Tuansee observed, in a thoughtful tone.

"You never can tell," the Admiral answered. "One thing is certain though: I don't think Starfleet is ready for another Enterprise just yet," after he said it he felt a momentary pang of pain in his stomach. He had known that Starfleet had laid the keel for the next Enterprise, the Enterprise-H, due to this vessel's new designation. It was to be the first of the next generation of vessel, enhanced even above the capabilities of this 18 year old vessel with all her refits. Starfleet had only just informed him of the decision - apparently their being part of the Diplomatic Corps had had a bit of an impact on morale.

"Then I had better hurry, if we're to find out." Ash replied, and hurried off.

William nodded, "Indeed. I would like for you to have this ready to go. I am going to be meeting with the Tactical personnel though, just to get a feel for Plan C."

"Hopefully, we won't need one, Admiral." Ash responded.

"Zeph," William called, "I'd like for you to ensure that that Probe is ready when we need it. With the Away Team over there who knows what situation we're going to face in the near future."

Zeph knew that William was talking about after Ash had made her modifications, he was to make sure the probe was in the launch tube and on hot standby. "It will be ready, Admiral, you can be assured of that."

"I'd like you both to join me to meet with the Tactical Officers when you're finished."

Zeph nodded while his tail shook twice in affirmation, "Understood sir."

"I'll be there." The Engineer called, as she left the bridge.

"I'll let you know when," the Admiral answered as Ash stepped into the Turbolift.
