"But I don't wanna!" Zoroh complained as he walked down the corridor with his brother and father.
William Teagarden sighed as he held his son's hand, "I understand, but this is important. I know that you think that seeing the Federation Council is boring, but it is important for you to learn about the Federation and what it means. It's important."
"Too much talking," Bunal added. "Can't we go to the holodeck? I want to watch Flotter."
"Maybe later," he really wanted to watch Flotter as much as his children apparently wanted to see the Federation Council. Actually the kids were probably more interested in seeing the Council than he was to see Flotter. "We're almost there."
They were almost to where they were scheduled to meet President Gruzy when he saw someone who he never thought he'd see again in his life. He stopped dead, his kids nearly pulling his arms out of socket as they kept walking along absently. The Admiral looked, staring, before he said it, "Mis?"
Nokomis had been contemplating her next meal as she moved down the corridor. Her baby girl kicked within her as she suggested various things. It was the source of some amusement, thinking that she could actually understand the dishes Mis was describing and had a preference. A voice from the past spoke and she stopped.
She turned. For a moment it seemed as if she were back on the Orion and then the haze faded. The image did not however and she found herself standing in front of Will. "Hi, she said rather stunned.
He stood, feeling like he'd been shot with a phaser on stun, looking at her. A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips as the past came crashing back upon him. It felt like a lifetime ago that he had been aboard the Orion with her. They had started a relationship back then, she made him feel a way he really hadn't ever felt before. Then the same classic story of a Starfleet Officer came crashing down upon them. His father, the revered then Commodore Danheel, arranged a mission with Starfleet Intelligence. He'd always wanted to return, to feel that way again, but life never let it happen. His reassignment led to his first position as an Executive Officer and later Captain.
Then the new world came back upon him as his son pulled tugged on his hand, "Daddy who dat lady?"
"I'm Mis," she pronounced it as if there were a Z on the end instead of an S. She held out her hand to the boy in case he'd been taught to shake. "I used to be friends with your dad, a long time ago on a ship called Orion."
"Me Bunal," the child in red announced confidently as he pointed at his brother in blue, "Dat Zoroh. Daddy want me to see the Federashion Council but I wanna go holodeck and watch Flotter."
" oh well that's a tough one. Flotter is pretty good. But, at the council there is a Casadian do you know what they look like? They have great big heads and look like Earth toads and they can catch insects with their tongues that are very long." She held out her hands in a gesture of the length. " His name is Batalib and tell him I said you want to see him catch a fly."
Bunal grabbed his father's hand, "Me wanna see! Me wanna see!"
William nodded, "We will, we will." He looked at Mis, there was so much he wanted to say. Too much he wanted to say. He paused as he held his son's hand, thinking back at all those years ago on the Orion. There was only one thing that came out, "You left Starfleet?"
She shrugged. "Maybe not forever, but it deem seem like a safer idea while I wait for the little one's arrival. And besides, I never had ambitions in Starfleet. I liked it where I was. Unfortunately they always want to promote you." She really didn't know what else to say. It was wholly unexpected to run into him like this.
He, absently, glanced down at his own chest at the rank insignia that rest upon it. Even though he was off duty and didn't need to have it on, it felt like it was part of him. Like he could never let it go. The person he was back then was a lot different than the one he was today. Back then he was at war with his father - the esteemed Commodore Dazad - and had tried to run from him. Instead he got drug along further and further due to his father's machinations. The weight of the communicator weighed heavily for a moment.
"Daddy's an Admiral," Zoroh beamed. "Like Gampa and Mummy."
For William his son's voice echoed in his ears.
"I see that, I offer my congratulations." In the back of her mind she hoped that he would treat his sons differently than his father had treated him with regards to their career. "Listen, I'm only on a small break but . . . . perhaps we could have dinner together? With your family of course. We could catch up. It's been a very long time."
"Say yes," Bunal ordered as he tugged on his father's hands.
Teagarden looked at his children and then back to the Kriosian. A slight smile tugged at his lips, "I'd... We'd like that. We're going to be heading on a short mission. How about dinner on the Enterprise next week?"
"That would be wonderful," she smiled. "You can send me the details."
"Wonderful," he answered. "I'll make sure the information is forwarded to you."
Zoroh protested, "Dada - Council or Flotter!"
William had a nervous giggle, "Alright youngling let's let you get a glimpse." He looked at at Mis, "See you soon?"
"Yes,"she smiled. "Soon."
