Fleet Admiral Lynz sat at her desk reading over reports. It had been a long while since her medical imposed isolation because of her injuries and the paperwork had just grown, and grown, and grown. From reports about the situation along the Klingon Border, to the Reunification of Romulus and Vulcan, there was just so much to look at and so little time. Now the Cardassians were starting to act up again. The Empires of the galaxy were starting to act like children.
To top it all off Daxus decided to reveal what was going on in the Delta Quadrant to Captain Frost and company. Just the thought of that revelation made her sick to her stomach. She full expected that the good Captain would be having words with her in the near future. At least she could blame it on William.
"Admiral Lynz?" The voice of her Secretary, Maret, interrupted her.
"Speak of the Devil," she mumbled as she tapped the companel accept key. "What is it?"
"Admiral William Teagarden is here to see you, Ma'am," his former Secretary answered and her current.
She grinned, "Send him in."
"Yes Ma'am."
When the channel closed she turned away from the computer terminal and toward the door. Resting her hands on her desk, next to the picture of their children, she watched as the Commanding Officer of Starfleet One came in. "Good to see you."
"You saw me on the Enter... Starfleet One less than an hour ago," he answered. "Nice to see that the Phoenix has a more impressive a drive than we do."
"I just had to have them push it a bit more," the Deltan/El-Aurian hybrid answered as she relaxed in her chair. "It's my job to be prepared for what the President's agenda means for Starfleet."
"It's too bad you weren't able to spend more time with me though," he said sitting down. "I've missed you a lot. This is the longest we've been together since the accident."
She had a momentary drop in her demeanor that only a husband could pick up on or an El-Aurian. Unfortunately for Lynz he was both. "About that," she picked up a PADD from the desk and walked around to join him at the guest chairs, "I suppose there's something you should know."
His heart sank, "Is everything ok? I know that Doctor Pulaski..."
"I'm fine," she answered, "but there were some complications." She handed him the PADD, "It's DNA encoded to you and I."
William started to read the contents of the PADD. In seconds his heart sank, "NO!"
Lynz nodded, "I'm afraid so."
He got up from his chair and stormed off toward the window mumbling unintelligibly as he paced. He paused and stared at her, "That whole Project was terminated - forcefully. It can't be!"
"There's a lot these days that you don't know, husband," she answered rather coldly. More coldly than he'd ever heard her speak. "It was the only way."
"It's an abomination!" He protested.
"And you're one of them too so don't give me that!" She countered. "It was the only way to make this whole plan work."
The Admiral had tears in his eyes, "It didn't have to work. We could've found another way."
"There was no other way," she answered. "This was the only way to make sure that every variable fell into place. I'm sorry this hurt you, but we all have a responsibility to ensuring that the Federation survives." Lynz sighed, "I questioned telling you, I questioned bringing you in on this, but I needed to tell you the truth."
He paused, "Where do we go from here?"
"With any luck," she walked over to him and put her hand in his, "Home for a little bit before you take back off."
"We have a distress call to investigate," William answered.
She brushed it off, "It can wait. Computer, privacy."
