1,918 words; about a 10 minute read

Mission: Short Treks
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: 2431-03-12, 11:00

After speaking with the Admiral, Taylor went to find his quarters. An adventure to say the least. A number of times, even with computer guidance he found himself in the wrong section. Then he accidently made it onto the main promenade, thinking the turbolift was across the teaming throng of people.

There were more people on the promenade deck than at his Academy graduation. Looking about he could see it was a security nightmare. He wasn't a large crowd sort of person to begin with and the hustle and bustle here was intense. After a few moments and a couple of inadvertent minor collisions, Taylor made his way out of the mass of people. After another ten minutes he finally got to his quarters.

It was definitely larger than his quarters at his last assignment. He actually had a separate bedroom. He looked about and all was pretty much Starfleet standard issue. Given how everything he owned had been destroyed in a Gorn attack a few months ago, it would have to do.

He sat at the terminal in the room, shot a quick note to his mom, letting her know he was there and then jumped into the shower. Once done, he dressed and feeling better, he stepped back out amongst the people and took a bit less time finding sickbay as he didn't go fully into the promenade.

Cyrus had made his rounds of medical, having had check on vitals of several patients, talking with the nurses there including Nurse Gable. At the moment things seemed to be at a routine pace. He had also checked in on the children who had come with their parents to do their normal regular check ups. One of the kids had given him a little piece of art work for him to have. Now Cyrus was barely able to figure out it was a tree with a bird in it. It was cute though, for the little girl telling him all about how a kitty tried to get up to the bird and the bird laughed at the kitty. That visitation done he headed back towards his office.

As he moved to the sickbay door, Taylor noticed the man in a blue uniform approaching. He thought about asking him about the procedure for physicals here, but given that the science department also wore blue, he decided not to assume. He entered sickbay and stopped at the main desk.

"I am Lieutenant Taylor Haines", he said to the attendant. "I am new here and need to schedule my physical. I am sure you are busy, but the sooner the better. I just got here and already have a to-do list a mile long."

"Well well, you've come to just the place" a distinct southern accent coming out from the tall man in the blue smock remarked. "Doctor Cyrus Marner, at your service and also the CMO of this fine establishment. If you'll come this way we'll get you set up. " his demeanor warm and genuine, with a smile that reached his eyes.

"Nice to meet you Doctor", Taylor said with a smile. "I'm the new Chief of Security. I'll try to stay out of here, but you know us security types. Always getting in the middle of things."

He followed Cyrus to the exam area.

"Where are you from?" Cyrus asked as he motioned to the bio bed. He retrieved his medical tricorder to begin the examination. He also put up a privacy screen, which Cyrus normally did.

"I was born on Deval V where my mom was running an archeological dig", Taylor said as he got on the bio bed. "We moved to Earth shortly after that. Mom started teaching at the Academy and dad was an intelligence consultant at Starfleet Command."

"I see, sounds to me like you may have had quite the interesting childhood." He noted the cybernetics that Taylor had, but didn't make any comments as of yet, as Cyrus continued the scans. "It looks like you're keeping yourself in good shape, any health issues you've had?"

"Overall, I am doing pretty good except I seem to be missing and arm and eye because some damn beast decided to bite it off and poke my eye out a couple of months ago", Taylor replied. "Otherwise, just peachy."

Cyrus looked up from his scans, and looked into Taylor's eyes. "Well then, hopefully you gave it what for. " his face actually dead serious. "You are alive and here, I think that counts for something, a lot of somethings."

"Well, we can see I didn't give it 'what for' or I wouldn't have this", he replied lifting up his arm. "and the person I was trying to protect wouldn't have KIA stamped in her personnel file. Let's move on to other parts of my body shall we?"

"Just a notion that I had, and I am indeed sorry for that happening." Cyrus responded. "Other than you having your replacements, the whole of you, is looking up to par. Now that is taken care of, unless there are some ailments I am not picking up. You've just arrived new on the station; do you have any questions you wish to ask."

"Indeed, how does one avoid the promenade in getting to the officers' quarters?", Taylor asked. "There doesn't seem to be an easy way? It took me forever to get here, so I am assuming unless there is a shortcut or bypass, it will take me the same getting back."

"All depends on what deck you have your quarters on. Besides, there normally are different ways to get there. And there are more than one turbo lift to go on. You know I can show the way I like to go. More of a back way." Cyrus remarked.

"That would be appreciated", Taylor said with a nod. "My last assignment was a much smaller facility with about 80% less people than here. It is going to take me a while to get used to it. I studied the schematics on the way here, but they don't really do it justice."

Cyrus noded at Taylors comment. "OKay, I can give you a clean bill of health and for now I am off shift. Need to go rustle up some grub and check my various files. Sure a doctor is never truly off the clock but, my shift is over." He closed up the tricorder removed the privacy screen. "I've got to go get something from my office and then we'll head out. If you want to follow me once again." flashing a smile.

Cyrus turned and headed for his office taking off his blue smock. In his office was a red fishing tackle box, which had several dings in it, and some scratches. He hung up his smock, grabbed his beige hat off of a peg, the hat had fish hooks and lures stuck in the upper part and turned to leave.

Taylor followed Cyrus into his office. He saw the tackle box, but had never seen one before now.

"Your medkit?", he queried/quipped.

"In some cases, yes, came in handy when dealing with a situation earlier on." Cyrus replied. "Some bounty hunter decided to put an Orion Slave collar on a crewman and we needed a certain tool to get that taken off. I had that tool and had our engineer use it to get that hellish thing off of the crewman." Cyrus commented. His tone even. "Okay, lets get ourselves out of here." and headed towards a side exit out of medical.

"Well, the bounty hunter is going to find his life getting a bit more difficult once I am through talking with him", Taylor says. "You and your friends did some great work."

Taylor followed Cyrus cringing hoping the man kept them away from larger crowds. It would take Taylor a while to get used to the hustle and bustle here, so it was good to have a guide.

It was a quiet way, leading out of medical away from the hustle and bustle of the promenade. "Much better isn't it?" Cyrus remarked, as he made his way towards the other turbolift. "Most people want to go somewhere they feel is most convienant, I don't mind going the road less traveled."

"It is indeed better for someone like me", Taylor replied. "There is so much to learn here personnel-wise, crew, civilians, all the best ways to get to places. I'm going to have to program the hologram to test me on all the locations. I'd rather not learn and knock someone on the promenade over."

"That would be a great idea. Especially for someone who is the new chief of security. You may need to figure out, short cuts through the jeffries tubes as well. And where you can go and not go." Cyrus added.

"Indeed, showing up in the Admiral's quarters accidently would be a touch embarrassing", Taylor replied with a slight chuckle as he visualized it in his mind.

"So, how long have you been here Doctor?" Taylor asked Cyrus.

Cyrus chuckled at the image Taylor's comment brought up. He has been to the Admiral's quarters before. Whoever ended up there accidentally, wouldn't survive.

Cyrus scratched his head when the other part was asked. "How long have I been here? You know, I don't quite know. Maybe about a year? Or less or more? Time seems to flow together when getting into the routine of day to day running of Medical. I will have to check my records to give you a straight answer. I am hoping I will be able to get to my relaxation program of going fishing. Last time I tried it didn't work out." as Cyrus continued on. "At least I have my tackle box back now."

"Fishing?", Taylor said, raising an eyebrow. "You mean like getting some creature to grab onto a sharp piece of metal and yank it through its lip?"

"Yes, that is exactly what I am talking about. I may not catch anything when I go fishing but it is a good way for some reverie and to just let the mind have some peace and serenity." Cyrus responded. "Sometimes I just sit in the boat and do some drawing. A good way for me to destress."

"I usually need to be doing something more physical to destress", Taylor replied. "Give me a nice ice wall to climb or a game of lacrosse on the holodeck. Meditation is difficult for me."

"Meditation isn't for everyone, but it is also a good way to balance the mindset as well. I tend to go swimming when I really need the physical activity." Cyrus responded. "Rock climbing, I've not done a lot of that."

"Well, I haven't done true rock climbing in some time", Taylor replied. "My last posting was on an ice planet, so it was mostly ice wall climbing. A touch more challenging, especially during the dark, which was most of the time at the outpost."

"I would reckon that would be rather challenging." Cyrus responded, the blonde haired doctor stepped into the turbolift. "You know this station is going to be your new place of residence. And there is a lot of good people here. Some of them I've been on a ship with, through some harrowing experiences. Make sure you get to know them."

The turbo lift stopped at Cyrus's floor. "I'll see you around" he stated and went on his way whistling 'Pop Goes The Weasel'.
