"I understand you have served on this ship for quite a while," Daeren Iril said to Galatea as she escorted him and Secretary Grayson from the Observation Deck to the area where Cabinet-level offices were. "Have you been continuously running for all that time?"
The holographic representation of Starfleet One's personality nodded as they continued to walk, "All but a brief period, Mister Ambassador. There were some issues when I was first brought online that needed ironing out, and I was briefly replaced by a different AI at one point, but aside from those two instances I have been active ever since. The program I represent was designed as a replacement for the LCARS interface on some vessels. Despite my program's successes it has not been release widespread throughout Starfleet."
"Forgive my question Galatea but how do you feel about that? That your program hasn't been released widespread through the fleet." He paused, Didn't the Vigilance have a similar AI program?"
"I actually haven't had much of a problem with it honestly," she answered. "My program is fairly complex and requires special equipment to properly function. In the long run the utilization of my software can become overwhelming to some computer systems and can, in some instances, cause issues with the psyche of the AI itself if not properly calibrated and dare I say it nurtured." She thought about it a moment, considering carefully the past and the incident involving the Starship Ranger - the sister ship of the aforementioned Vigilance. She thought about Angie and what happened to her as well as her first experience aboard this ship.
She grinned, "Besides, I feel it makes me fairly unique."
Jonathan smiled broadly and chuckled, "And not the least bit modest. Good for you! You are unique Galatea. Always remember that."
"You know, nurturing is something I had not considered," Daeren said to Galatea. "Do you get much in the way of nurturing? From what I have seen, you pretty much flit from place to place, remaining only for as long as you must, to fulfill your purpose for being in a given location. But nurturing requires far more presence than that. Or perhaps I am simply ignorant of all that you do--which is quite likely."
"I am treated as part of the crew, Ambassador, just like any other officer aboard the ship. My rank of Commander is not honorary and I have a close interaction with the Admiral and crew. I socialize with them, despite not having defined 'off hours' like the rest of the crew, have my own quarters, and my viewpoints are listened to. I am also encouraged to explore my own interests." They stepped into the Turbolift as she finished her statement.
"Now that is interesting. What are your interests Galatea?" Jonathan asked with genuine curiosity and interest. "If I'm being too personal please feel free to tell me to mind my own business." Jonathan replied to the AI.
She smirked, "No need to fret, Mister Secretary. I do have several interests, most of them still military in nature, but I am a firm student of history and military tactics. I love reading about historical battles and conflicts. I believe them to be the best way to avoid the dangers of the past." They were approaching the Ambassadorial Section.
"Eminently sensible," Daeren said. "I've studied quite a lot of military history, too. I must admit, though, that my favorite guilty-pleasure reading is the Jedediah Tully and the Spacefleet Marines series--I think there must be some 200 of them by now. I've lost count."
"That's a very prudent thought Galatea." Jon interjected. "If one does not learn from the past they are doomed to repeat it."
She nodded in response as they approached the Offices of the Cabinet Secretaries. "I believe this to be our destination, Ambassadors. A full complement of personnel are at your disposal while aboard. I hope that you find your time with us acceptable. The Admiral will brief you when we reach our destination."
"Thank you Galatea. You have been most helpful." Jon answered. "I enjoyed our talk. I hope we get the chance to talk again in the future." Even as he looked at the large no grandiose offices set aside for Cabinet Secretaries. He let out a low whistle, "Wow. Most impressive indeed."
"Thank you. I shall look forward to talking to you again later when time permits, Commander," Daeren said to Galatea. he gave her a nod in farewell and then walked down the corridor with Jonathan, shaking his head.
"I can't imagine needing all of this space," Daeren murmured to his colleague as he opened the door to his own office. "Well, Jonathan, give a yell if you need me to rescue you from paperwork. I shall assuredly do the same."
Jonathan shook his head in awe at the size of the office allocated to him. "It's not the paperwork I'm worried about Daeren it's finding my back out. I may need a navigational beacon to guide me out." He said with a laugh.
Daeren laughed, too. "Thank the gods for LCARS," he said as he went into his own office.
