926 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Hope
Location: Sector General, Deep Space 12
Timeline: 2431-03-08, 21:00

Located near the recreation levels, Sector General served as the hospital complex aboard Deep Space 12. Unlike the medical complexes aboard starships, Sector General took up the entire deck aboard Deep Space 12 and offered pretty much every medical specialty and service that a person could ever need. Deep Space 12's Sector General had been quite historic and storied, especially aboard the Starship Enterprise. The Admiral had served on DS12, under both his father and mother, during his first command. His mother was Chief Medical Officer before she was transferred to the Hippocrates to serve as its commander.

With so much space aboard it wasn't very surprising that Sawbones was so busy. Due to the size and complement of the Station, DS12's Sector General was like a major hospital on old Earth. It was constantly busy, filled to the brim with patients, and doctors were struggling to keep up. Even for he, a hologram, it was a bit much. While he was assigned to the Enterprise, when it was docked his program was transferred to the station to assist with medical needs there. Doctor Marner was also aboard and the CMO of the Station. He had to give him a lot of credit. At such a young age to be responsible for such an important medical operation. It was a good thing for him and his career.

He couldn't help but wonder what the others were thinking as they made their way through the hospital complex.

Cyrus arrived where Commander Sawbones was, looking at two PaDD's a the same time comparing his notes on both of them. He remarked absentmindedly, "I need to put this on paper, better for me to compare the statistics in medical than trying to look at two readings at the same time." he paused and looked up stopping himself from running into Doctor Sawbones. He still marveled at how similar the Doctor in front of him looked like Leonard McCoy whom he idolized growing up. "Hi there." a slow smile forming.

"Seems like you're burning the candle at both ends these days too, Doctor," the replica of Leonard McCoy identified as he stood at the Administrative console. The hologram had upgraded its matrix in recent weeks, choosing to base its updated appearance on Doctor Leonard McCoy when he was working for the Interspecies Medical Exchange during his retirement following the Enterprise's five-year mission. "How does it feel to be Chief Medical Officer for an entire sector?"

Cyrus blew out a puff of air. "It is daunting to be quite truthful, as well as an honor. And I've been looking in on our new citizens as well. I am quite glad at the progress that has taken place there. I was a bit vocal at the proceedings to determine our fates. I actually for a half moment thought I'd be tossed into the brig for my being so verbal. Its just that it would have been such a great loss for those new beings to be allowed to die."

"I think that you did the right thing," the hologram answered. "The Federation cannot forget the very ideals upon which it was founded. When it does then it takes good people to step up and, sometimes, not so gently remind them of how shortsighted they'd become. I have memories of a lot of times when a certain Captain from history decided to rechart the Federation's course back on the correct path. I even remember a time when my ancestor stood before a similar body after they did what was right."

"He was my hero, your ancestor. He wanted to do what was best for people in need." Marner looked around, "So much work to do and so much to catch up on as well. About all I can do is keep moving forward moving one grain of sand at a time, like what an ant does."

The LMH looked around, "Fortunately for you i don't need to rest, but you do. Why don't you head off for the night and get some sleep? I can mind the store."

Marner gave a nod. "I am tired and the sandman's been trying to get me to sleep that my eyes feel like they are full of sand. I'll take pity on the poor Sandman and get Forty Winks." turning off his padds. "Good night Doctor and thank you."

Sawbones nodded politely and stepped away to join Doctor Ilkun with another patient, letting Doctor Marner get some peace.

Well Marner did make it to his quarters in around about way, he wanted to check one more time on how they were faring, reaching out to contact them. His finger paused, he needed sleep...Then he pressed the button to make connection to that planet they had been settled on.

"Computer connect me to Davni of the medical team. I wish to see how things are going there?"

Davni was not the one to appear on the other side of the monitor and Doctor Iblis Ilkun appeared. The Chelon Doctor, who resembled a Giant Snapping Turtle from Old Earth, looked somewhat surprised, "Doctor? I thought that you were going to the Admiral's Birthday and then to get some rest?"

"Yes, this is true I had forgotten and I will be going there. Good night Doctor Ilkun. I shall talk with you later on." Marner replied and ended the conversation. It was time to go.

The Surgeon nodded, "Have a great night!"

With a return nod, Cyrus answered. "Thank you Doctor, I will try." And turned off his viewscreen.
