President's Log, Stardate 107690.3:

Yesterday was one of the most stressful days since I was elected President of the United Federation of Planets and today won't be a picnic either. The worlds along the former Romulan Neutral Zone are up in arms and I can't blame them for how they feel. Praetor Sakkath's offer for Ni'Var to the return to the Federation family is turning a lot of heads for a lot of reasons, but mainly for their stipulation that they would remain the seat of government for the Romulan Republic while Federation members. So, if we grant them membership we are giving the Federation's greatest enemy a seat at the table.

The worlds that the Romulans abandoned to destruction have not been pleased by any of it. Many of those worlds, like Vashti, have been up in arms demanding that we deny the application immediately. It's not that simple. Ni'Var is a founding nation of the Federation. Their return would be a boon to morale throughout the Federation. Not only that, but I have a personal stake in the whole enterprise. My adopted son is Vulcan. To return his homeland to the Federation would be meaningful to him. Perhaps the greatest gift I could ever bestow.

If only I can keep the Federation together in the process.
