Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to Continuing Voyages Games! Below you will find an overview of our community, as well as answers to common questions about joining, character creation, posting expectations, and game policies.
About Continuing Voyages Games
Continuing Voyages is a collaborative narrative roleplaying community centered in the Star Trek universe. Writers work together through co-authored story posts, personal character logs, and Joint Posts to explore new worlds, navigate galactic diplomacy, and face deep-space challenges.
Our campaign settings span diverse eras—from mid-25th-century Starfleet fleet operations (2439 era) to far-future exploration and specialized starships (3189 era)—offering rich storytelling opportunities for starship crews, station personnel, and planetary missions.
Q: How do I qualify to join a game?
To be eligible to join, all applicants must be at least 18 years of age and meet one of two prerequisites:
- You have previously written in a roleplaying game alongside an approved, active player in Continuing Voyages who can vouch for your participation.
- You agree to be paired with a Player Mentor (typically your assigned Department Head) who will guide you through onboarding, post formatting, and story integration.
Q: What is the age limit for Continuing Voyages?
Continuing Voyages is an adults-only community. All players must be at least 18 years of age or older to hold membership, apply for characters, or participate in our games, forums, and Discord community spaces.
Q: What eras and settings do Continuing Voyages games cover?
Our games cover multiple distinct eras across Starfleet history, including 25th-century settings (such as 2439) and far-future settings (such as 3189). Each campaign vessel or station maintains its own operational roster, mission directives, and timeline context.
Q: Which character species are allowed, and are any restricted?
Standard Federation species (Humans, Vulcans, Bajorans, Trill, Andorians, Betazoids, Tellarites, etc.) are open for creation. Non-standard or custom alien species require Game Manager approval.
- Banned / Non-Playable: Q, Borg (fully assimilated collective), Prophets, Pah-wraiths, Species 8472, or god-like non-corporeal entities.
- Restricted / Approval-Only: Romulans, Cardassians, Jem'Hadar, Founders, Breen, Liberated Borg/XB, Bynars, augments, or rare hybrids.
Restricted species are evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Game Manager during application review.
Q: Do I need to be an expert on Star Trek canon to write here?
Not at all! While basic familiarity with the universe helps, our games welcome both veteran roleplayers and enthusiasts who are newer to Star Trek. Your Game Manager and your assigned Player Mentor/Department Head are always available to help you navigate ship operations, technobabble, and lore questions.
Q: Can I apply for a senior leadership position (e.g., Executive Officer or Chief Engineer) right away?
All starting ranks and department assignments are determined by the Game Manager. While new players can apply for Department Head roles, major senior leadership positions (such as First Officer or Captain) are typically reserved for established members or granted at the GM's discretion after demonstrating steady posting activity and collaborative writing.
Q: What is a Joint Post (JP) and how do they work?
A Joint Post (JP) is a co-authored post written by two or more players collaborating on a single scene (such as a bridge sequence, away mission, or personal conversation). Players typically draft JPs via shared documents or Discord tags, passing dialogue back and forth before publishing the completed scene as an official story post.
Q: What happens if real life gets busy and I fall behind on posting?
Real life always comes first. If you know you will be unable to meet the weekly posting guideline or respond to tags within 3 calendar days, simply file a Leave of Absence (LOA) with your GM. Standard LOAs can cover up to 60 days. Filing an LOA protects your character from being transitioned to inactive status while you handle real-world matters.
Q: What happens if my character gets injured or killed in the story?
Player Characters cannot be killed or permanently altered without explicit, prior consent from the player. While Game Managers may place characters in intense narrative situations during missions, you maintain ultimate ownership over major life-altering outcomes for your character.
Q: How are unique or advanced technologies (like Spore Drives or prototype systems) handled?
Specialized ship technologies and prototype systems are overseen directly by the Game Manager to ensure story balance. While characters can interact with and operate these systems during posts, major technological changes or plot revelations involving them are coordinated with campaign leadership.
Q: Can I transfer a character I created in another Star Trek RP group to Continuing Voyages?
Yes! You retain ownership of your original character concepts. However, you will need to submit their bio to the GM so their rank, history, and background can be adjusted to align with the specific setting, timeline, and roster requirements of the game you are joining.
Q: When can I play a second character?
After completing 30 days of active, consistent writing with your primary Player Character, you may request GM approval to create a secondary PC. Secondary characters must be placed in a separate department or location to prevent you from writing scenes against yourself.
Q: Can I participate in multiple Continuing Voyages games at once?
Yes. Members in good standing are welcome to apply to and play in multiple campaign games within Continuing Voyages, provided they can maintain active writing commitments and posting requirements across all assigned characters.
Q: Are AI tools permitted for writing story posts or generating character portraits?
Yes, with guidelines. AI tools may be used for proofreading, outlining, drafting NPC interactions, or generating character and scene artwork (provided images adhere to PG-13 community standards). However, all official story posts must reflect active human creative direction and editing—100% unedited AI text generation is not permitted for post submissions.
Q: How are grievances or interpersonal issues handled?
All grievances must be brought privately to Game Leadership via Private Message (PM) or Direct Message (DM) on Discord. Issues will be acknowledged within 48 hours and handled privately. Public debates, call-outs, or hostile interpersonal discussions in OOC channels are strictly prohibited.
Q: What happens if I decide to leave a game?
You may depart a game at any time by sending a private notification to your Game Manager. Your character will be transitioned off active status or honorably reassigned. You maintain full ownership of your Player Character, though published Joint Posts will remain in the group narrative archive for continuity.
