Meeting the Other Boss

2,045 words; about a 10 minute read

Mission: Short Treks
Location: Galatea's Office, Deep Space 12
Timeline: 2431-03-13, 11:00

Galatea stood at the computer workstation in her office aboard Deep Space 12 typing on the computer keyboard built into the desk. Attache to Admiral Willian Targaryen, Galatea took her responsibilities incredibly seriously and was keenly focused on ensuring that the Admiral's needs were met at all times. It was a role that she relished and, more and more, had grown aware that it was the career transition she needed. Ever since she had been in command of Enterprise at Talos she had grown weary of field assignments where she needed to make life and death decisions. She would rather be back here.

It was strange to her. Her artificial intelligence had been constructed to represent the Enterprise and its needs while serving with the crew. While, outwardly, it had been constructed as an explorer, she knew better. Enterprise was a warship, through and through, which was why her newfound views on the galaxy had been so troubling to her. Had she really lost her edge because of Talos, or was more in play than she wanted to address?

Regaining her faculties, she realized she had stopped working and had done little of the tactical analysis that the Admiral had requested of her. Preparing to return to her duties, she heard the door chime.

Crewman Melly stood on the other side of the door. While being yeoman to the Admiral she knew from the talk they had that she was in actuality the Yeoman to Galatea. She had served on the Enterprise years ago and knew of her but never really in her capacity as a fighter pilot met her. Was she nice? Unknown. But she would do her best and held her PADD close as she waited to be let in.

Galatea turned her head toward the door, releasing it silently to allow the approaching crewman entry. "You may enter."

Entering quickly Melly turned to look around at everything before smiling as she walked to Galatea. Stopping a few feet from her the Only did a bit of a curtsy despite having no dress and gazed up at her. "Um hello Ma'am it's been some time.. I'm Admiral Targaryen's personal Yeoman now but as he explained I'm moreso your Yeoman. How may I be of service Ma'am?" A scan wouldn't even be needed to tell the small girl was nervous, elevated heart rate, and fearful of making a bad impression.

Galatea's connection to the sensor array quickly provided her the very details that the Crewman had probably been trying to hide. Many on the crew were off put by the hologram and her connection to the Enterprise's systems. Many were even more concerned that she was now connected to Deep Space 12 as well. Even now a version of her program was operating on Enterprise while she stood here with the new Yeoman, which was perhaps the scariest part to them all. Despite being the same program, the two had even been known to have full debates with one another.

"Crewman Melly," her eyes started to glow as she processed the data, "indeed the Admiral did alert me that I should be expecting to meet with you. I am Galatea, Attache to Admiral Targaryen and Artificial Intelligence to the Starship Enterprise. It is nice to meet you, but I am certain that you will regret this assignment relatively quickly, Crewman."

Melly could only smile, "Everyone tells me that Ma'am, so far the only assignment I regretted was Admiral Norith.. and I doubt you have planned for me what he did. So order and I will obey, no matter how demeaning or minor I am yours to command." She lowers her eyes to the AI's feet to show she is unthreatening and won't argue no matter what.

"Crewman it is not my intention to demean you with your responsibilities aboard this station, well aside from filing the crew rosters and fuel consumption logs which some may view that way," Galatea said as she looked at the newcomer. She pointed to a stack of datapads, "The Admiral has asked me to review the contents of those PADDs and catalog the findings from the terraforming of New Talos."

Melly nodded and walked over taking the top PADD and began to look, "If you want I can begin reviewing now Ma'am and I do not mind the filing, it's not demeaning to me." She smiled, "It needs to be done and I am happy to do it. I have no fight left in me so I am happy to do the paperwork so others may have there adventures."

The hologram's eye rose in a Vulcanesque manner, "Why do you feel you have no fight left in you, Crewman?"

The hologram's eye rose in a Vulcanesque manner, "Why do you feel you have no fight left in you, Crewman?"

"I've had all the fight beaten out of me physically and psychologically. Even touching a phaser for my uniform makes me physically ill. I don't think I could shoot a borg if it was trying to assimilate me.. I am going to therapy with Counselor R'elle. But for now I am happy to be doing what others consider demeaning. It's right for me," Melly said trying to give a smile but having trouble.

Galatea reviewed the details from the internal sensors of Deep Space 12, the readout data suggesting the smile was being forced. Instead of push further, she instead chose to move forward but logged the information for follow up later, "If you would like to meet with Science Officer Snow I am certain that she would be interested in speaking with you."

"Yes Ma'am I would love to but what would you have me meet with them to discuss? Is it work related? Social? I am merely asking so that I can be properly ready to talk to them," Melly seemed eager to meet new people..

The hologram referenced the PADDs that the Crewman had been asked to review, "The subject of your discussion would be the terraforming of New Talos."

"Yes Ma'am, I shall review the PADDs then meet the Science Officer and have them fill me in, within my clearance on the status and information of the terraforming. If I may ask, I doubt my clearance is high as when I was yeoman to the Chief of Staff of the Federation President for a day or two. But should I be concerned if the Science Officer tells me classified? Or just nod and not press for information?" she asked.

Galatea actually laughed, "Yeoman, you work for an Admiral who is married to the Commander of Starfleet. I think it's safe to say you're clearance is actually higher than it was before."

"Ah.. my mistake I am sorry. Still new to this all, not too long ago I was a convict now i'm a yeoman. But I will learn. Shall I go review these PADD's in my quarters and prepare for the meeting with Lieutenant Commander Snow? I ask to go to my quarters so I do not disturb you Ma'am," Melly's eyes began to lower, a reaction to the stronger presence in the room.

The hologram was already busily reviewing the data on her monitor as she answered directly, "You may come and go as you please, Yeoman. I am not a stickler that you need to remain here at your deck to accomplish your assignments."

"Yes Ma'am, I will take these to my quarters and review and put them to memory then contact the Lieutenant Commander for a overview and opinions on anything else they might want to add.", Melly quickly put all the PADD's in a sealed carry case before saluting and scooting off.
