Punctuality

828 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Exodus
Location: Office of Councilor Caxl, Federation Council
Timeline: 2430-01-10, 10:20

Tega rolled her eyes as she looked at the chronometer on her desk. This was the fifth time this week that Councilor Caxl had left someone waiting for him and it was becoming an annoyance beyond belief. She had been here for almost a decade serving as the Senior Aide to the Councilor from Benzar and, so far, Caxl had been the worst. He had started off meeting all the criteria to be an excellent Representative and recently that had changed. Now he was more interested in ego, more focused on his own needs than that of others.

Now he'd asked for her to start packing her things and the office in preparation for today's Council Session. He'd probably be late for that too. She took a deep breath from her rebreather and let it out in a sigh. She checked the chronometer again as she heard the doors slide open.

"Where have you?" She noticed that it wasn't the Ambassador and rather someone else. "Oh, sorry I thought you were someone else. Welcome to the Embassy of Benzar," Tega greeted kindly. "Sorry for the mess, we're just packing some things."

Not knowing who the woman was expecting Mis didn't exactly know what to say on the matter. She opened her mouth to introduce herself when the woman apologized again for the state of the room. "Don't worry about it. Everyone has a different . . . ." she glanced around her. "Filing system. My name is Nokomis Diza. I guess you're expecting me."

She paused, knowing that she was really wondering where the Councilor was. "But of course," she tried to recover from the gaffe as quickly as she could. "You have a meeting with Councillor Caxl?" It was more of a question than she'd meant it to be. "He's not arrived yet. I can take you to his office and you could wait there if you wish?"

"Sure," Nokomis said. She wouldn't mind the time to just sit alone, it recharged her as she was an introvert by nature and if it allowed her a moment to snoop around with her eyes, then all the better.

The Assistant nodded with a smile after taking a breath from her rebreather. "Please follow me," she saud as she started down the hallway and toward the office in the back. "We may not have the largest of the offices, but the Councilor does have the best view I think."

Nokomis supposed it was a stressfull job and a good view might help with that, otherwise she saw no need to have one really. She'd been in space so long that sometimes there were spectacular views but all in all most of the time it was just blackness with a little backdrop of stars. "Thanks" she said waddling a little bit after her.

She pressed the release and looked in, only to see the unthinkable. She could only scream at the sight of the body of her boss on the floor, blood flowing from a gaping wound.

Nokomis felt as if time had slowed down. It took her much longer to realize that the other woman's scream was serious and not something played out before her like an ancient movie or communications broadcast. She rushed forward when her brain finally clicked. "Oh my god. Call for help." She knelt down by the person feeling for a pulse even though the injury was severe. If the wound was still bleeding it meant the heart must be pumping, there might still be a chance.

Time seemed to pass by fast. The medical team arrived a few moments later from Spacedock. Clad in Starfleet blue, they immediately set to work. The leader of the team, a Benzite herself, ran detailed scans. "Whoever did this was a pro. The injury was perfectly placed, designed to cause not only death but a painful one."

Nomkomis frowned. She was no detective. "Did he have a lot of enemies?"

The secretary paused, "He was announcing that 20 worlds were leaving the Federation at the Council session today."

"So that would be a yes," Mis sighed. She supposed due to her conscious she was going to have to help solve this mystery. "Who was his last appointment with?"

The Benzite secretary stared at the Councilor, her eyes not leaving him as she took another breath from the apparatus on her chest. "I'll have to research that," she answered honestly as tones erupted from the overhead, "The session is about to resume."

Nokomis nodded. "I would like to be kept informed," she replied as she prepared to leave. "We'll find who did it," she assured the other woman. "It might just take a little bit of time."

The Secretary nodded as she watched them cover her boss with a blanket, "Unfortunately time is something we may not have much of..."

Knowing that was true, Nokomis nodded once and turned to leave. A mystery was not something she was willing to let go of , ever.
