History

Personal History Slorir Varin, the son of Peres Varin and Haril Varin, was born in 2365 at the Cardassian colony on Arawath. His parents, both members of the Cardassian Guard's Fourth Order, had been stationed there as part of the Cardassian Union's efforts to colonize resource rich planets and begin mining their valuable resources. His life on Arawath was relatively uneventful; however, things would quickly change for him when his parents would be reassigned to serve under the leadership of Gul Evek. With the conclusion of the negotiations of the Federation/Cardassian Treaty of 2370, Slorir's parents were reassigned to assist with the transfer of the Federation Colony on Dorvan V to Cardassian control and to assist with patrols of the new Demilitarized Zone between the Federation and the Cardassian Union. While his mother was assigned to help with administration of the new colony, his father remained under the direct command of Gul Evek and was assigned to help overcome the Maquis threat. Shortly afterward, his father was killed while on a mission to Juhraya to investigate the leadership structure of the Maquis.

The death of his father was especially troubling for Slorir as, for Cardassians, family life was incredibly important. Because of the death of his father, his mother Haril was able to successfully petition the Cardassian Central Command to arrange her reassignment to Cardassian Headquarters on Cardassia Prime due to her experiences. Slorir was able to attend the best academies on Cardassia; however, the growing threat of the Klingon Empire became a constant source of concern even at the capitol. Slorir's suspicions of the Klingons grew almost as strongly as those he had against the Federation and Starfleet. When the Cardassian Union joined the Dominion he - like so many other Cardassians - was deeply relieved to know that the Union was now one of the dominant powers of the Alpha Quadrant.

As the Dominion Wars raged and the tide of battle began to turn, his fears quickly returned. His mother remained at the Central Command and worked closely with Legate Dukat and later Legate Damar. When the Dominion grew more authoritative over the actions of the Cardassian Union and Legate Damar openly rebelled against the Dominion overseers. His mother chose to remain as a mole within the Cardassian Central Command for the Cardassian Liberation Front; however, she was quickly discovered transmitting information to the rebel base on Atbar Prime and executed for her crimes. Slorir himself was placed into detention in Lakarian City for his mother's crimes, barely escaping when the Dominion later destroyed the city.

While family was everything to the Cardassians, orphans were not seen as favorably. Living on the streets, Slorir would eventually be rescued by a Romulan Rescue Team and taken to the colony on Kelvas Prime where he would live in a refugee camp for several years before he came of age and was able to join the Cardassian Guard as a Security Specialist just like his father. Excelling in his studies, his history did not win him any favors though as a War Orphan and closed many doors due to his lack of strong family connections. That, coupled with the reduced capacity of the Cardassian Union through the Treaty of Bajor, limited his opportunities for advancing. In time he rose to the rank of Gil, but it took nearly triple the amount of time it normally would to do so.

Serving on a small patrol vessel, the Mahangren, there was little opportunity to be noticed among the crew of stalwart officers. The ship was under powered, over populated, and on the verge of breaking to pieces. Dozens aboard were more experienced and of the same rank as Slorir, making competition for any promotion extremely fierce. After almost three years aboard the Mahangren he was able to gain favor with Gul Oranav after saving the Gul during a negotiation with the Chalnoth. This led to his being made Assistant Security Officer of the Mahangren, but no promotion. This disparaged Slorir as, in previous generations, not achieving rank after so long would have led to dismissal from the Cardassian Guard.

With the support of Gul Oranav, Varin was able to apply for and transfer to the Senior Security Officer position aboard the freighter Arilrae. For many this would have been seen as a step down; however, for Slorir it served as a career boost as he had the opportunity to interact with and meet representatives of other races. Nonetheless, this did little to improve his impression of the Federation nor the Klingon Empire. With the Cardassians agreeing to assist the Romulans after the Federation's withdrawal of support for their relocation efforts, Slorir was able to parlay his experiences aboard the Arilrae and Mahangren into an assignment to the Rysta as Executive Officer. This led to a promotion to the rank of Glinn as he worked with the Gul to transport Romulan refugees and supplies.

When Gul Tanud was lost during a riot of Romulan refugees, Slorir ascended to command of the Rysta but maintained the rank of Glinn. Maintaining the supply runs as the galaxy reeled from the diminishment of the Romulan Star Empire, Varin realized he would never be more than a freighter captain unless he took bold steps to secure his future. Enrolling in University, Slorir left the Rysta behind and took a sabbatical from the Cardassian Guard to obtain his degree in Interstellar Relations.

Upon graduation, Slorir was assigned to the Cardassian Diplomatic Service and renewed his status as a member of the Cardassian Guard. His rank of Glinn was restored and he served as an attache to the Cardassian Ambassador to the Bajor Sector Hjal. Through the experience gained, Slorir was promoted to Diplomatic Envoy to the Bajor Sector and served directly under Ambassador Hjal. It was believed that Slorir would succeed Hjal with her retirement; however, the Detapa Council chose instead to appoint Envoy Otrol. This led Slorir to immediately apply to serve in the Cardassian Military, leading to his assignment on the patrol vessel Thrarim as Executive Officer and Security Officer.

When the Federation annexed the derelict Nor Class outpost in the Briar Patch, Slorir was immediately promoted to command of the Thrarim and assigned to serve as the Cardassian Liaison to the Risan Sector. This exposure to Federation culture had an impact upon Glin Varin, who slowly began to accept the ideals of the Federation. As the Cardassian Union slowly morphed into the Republic of Cardassia, Slorir Varin chose to remain with the diplomatic corps to help maintain Cardassia's edge within the galaxy. While much of his career is considered classified, his responsibilities never strayed far from the Federation itself.
