453 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Atlantis
Location: Prefect's Chambers, Atlantis
Timeline: 2429-12-04, 13:00

"It is confirmed by our surface telescopes, Madame Prefect, the Federation vessel has left orbit."

Prefect Daircall reached toward the communications equipment on her desk. Flipping the toggle switch she answered relieved, "Thank you, Ground Station. Alert me immediately if they return... or if any ships return for that matter."

"Yes, Prefect," the light on the communicator went dark showing that the channel had been closed.

Daircall rose to her feet and walked toward the balcony. Looking out upon the oceans of her world she felt a sense of relief that the Starfleet ship had left them. They had tried for so long to expand their viewpoint upon the universe, to make their mark, only to find that the Humans had already beaten them to the punch. The Preservers had pulled them from their world after making them a dominant force and taken it all away. Now they were nothing more than a third rate world. She slammed her fist into the side of a flower pot in frustration, knocking it and its contents into the sea below.

"Be careful, my child."

The Prefect turned quickly, scanning the balcony, "Who is that? Who is there? This is a private office. You cannot be here!"

"But I am not here," the disembodied voice answered. "I am speaking to you from elsewhere. From a world beyond worlds."

"I've had enough of other worlds for a lifetime," she answered turning back to the oceans beyond. "I am content with this one."

There was no hesitation on the part of the other, "Your words and actions do not support one another, child. I am here to give you a chance to make things different for your people."

She stiffened at the statement, keeping her back to the door and looking at the seas. A gentle wind brushed her hair, "How?"

"I will make your people a leader among the leaders of the galaxy," the voice was lyrical, kind. "All you have to do is support our efforts to build a stronger government, one of peace and prosperity for all worlds, and to help enforce our way upon the barbarians that make up the Federation, the Klingon, and Romulan governments. If you do this we will make your world home to this new way."

The Atlantean stood firm, considering all that could be lost by further contact with the offworlders. Though, she knew that there was more to gain. If this voice were correct they would be restored to a role of leadership, of command upon the galaxy, as was promised to them centuries ago. This was their chance to be what they were meant to be. Atlantis would dominate the cosmos.

"What do I have to do?"
